PHILIPSBURG-The Detective Department is presently investigating a very serious case of ill-treatment.

The incident took place around 3:00am on Friday, February 19, in the area of Carolina Bar located on the Soualiga Boulevard in Sucker Garden.

The victim with initials M.W.L. was a crew member of a cruise ship, which spent the night docked at the A.C. Wathey Cruise Facilities. The victim wanted to get back to the ship and approached a “gypsy driver,” who charged US $20 for the trip.

When the victim refused to pay that amount, he was suddenly attacked by the driver and two of his friends and beaten severely. As a result of the beating the victim suffered a very serious ankle fracture. He was taken to the St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) for medical treatment.

EDITOR’S NOTE:

This is the second visitor to be attacked in the last 2 months. On December 22, 2015, a civil servant and a tourist leaving the island were viciously attacked by a gypsy driver and his friend. This happened in front of the Princess Juliana International Airport (PJIA) building.

The argument was also about payment, and that the tourist was being over charged. Sadly, the PJIA Security Team never gave the tourist the opportunity to file an official complaint at the Detectives Department.

Two months after that, an official complaint still was not filed via the Prosecutor’s office by the Government about the attack on the civil servant.
However, the Government worker, in his capacity as citizen of the country and as the law prescribes, has filed an official complaint via the Prosecutor’s Office.
