PHILIPSBURG, Sint Maarten — Minister with responsibility for GEBE Angel Meyers has just returned from a renewable energy conference in the US and has been inspired to pursue certain initiatives that will help the country save on its energy bill. One such initiative is the installation of LED light bulbs in the streetlights on St. Maarten.
“Those LED lamps are purchased in the US and I met a representative from a company in Barbados that is one of the number one in the world in producing LED lighting,” Minister Angel said, adding that this could prove a cost saving venture for the government.
Meanwhile, the minister suggested that the conference in the US was quite insightful. “St. Maarten for example, approximately 20 percent of our GDP is on importing oil products,” the minister said. He said he will be pursuing various renewable energy projects for St. Maarten including solar and other areas in the coming weeks and months.
He even disclosed that funding is available for renewable energy initiatives. “There was a representative, as I indicated, from the Caribbean Development Bank and the World Bank—they are there and are willing to provide funding for renewable development,” he said.
