Minister Jacobs attends Health and Wellness fair at Vocational


SOUTH REWARD – Under the theme “Depending on Each Other to Create a Healthy Future,” the St. Maarten Vocational Training School (SMVTS) held its 3rd annual Health and Wellness fair on Monday, December 5.

Minister of Education Silveria Jacobs as well as Head of Division Public Education Glenderlin Davis-Holiday were in attendance.

Minister Jacobs encouraged all students to apply all the information gained at the health and wellness fair. She encouraged each student to learn, grow, and share the information acquired at the fair. “Learn about what you are putting into your body, learn about what you’re doing to your body to remain healthy, not just to live long, but to live well. Take all [the information] you can from this fair,” the Minister added.

The positive culture at the SMVTS was evident at the fair. Student Davidson Charles was the 1st runner up in the 7th annual SXM Interscholastic Idol Song Festival. Charles graced the stage with a rendition for the Minister and onlookers. Director of SMVTS Rita Bourne-Gumbs, alongside management and staff have been displaying the change of culture and a change in students at the school.

The students have been succeeding academically, as well as being involved in sports such as baseball, basketball and soccer. The students have also been excelling in the arts.

There were various stakeholders from the health and wellness field present at the fair to relay information to the students as well as perform demonstrations. The Red Cross of St. Maarten, Collective Prevention Services (CPS), St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC), St. Maarten Laboratory Services, Turning Point, as well as Belair Fitness Center were in attendance.

The Minister thanked the various entities for participating in the fair and congratulated the organizers, management and staff on a successful fair.
