Ministry VSA issues warning for fire at dump

GREAT BAY, (DCOMM) – The Collective Preventive Services (CPS), a government department under the Ministry of Public Health, Social Development and Labour, is advising persons living downwind from the landfill fire, to close windows and doors, especially persons who have a respiratory challenge.  This action should also be taken in the future.

For persons who suffer from asthma, shortness of breath, or any other respiratory challenges, to close their windows and doors until the fumes clear.

Individuals who do not have respiratory issues but are residing downwind should also close their windows and doors if irritated by the smell from the fire.

Minister of Public Health Emil Lee commented, “The ministry is very much aware of the potentially negative impact that chemicals released into the air by the fire at the dump can have on the health of the population.

“We advise the population to exercise caution when downwind of the fumes from the fire, and this also applies for future fire events at the landfill.”

For information you can call CPS 542-2078 or 542-3003.

  1. SXM Government officials,

Is there any plan for the extinguishing of the dump fire? I am sure that the immediate irritation is insignificant in comparison to the long term effects of breathing toxic fumes of burning plastics etc… especially on our children. How many cancer cases will crop up in 5…8…10 years from now in our kids? I am sure that the next payment on your new luxury car is important to you senators and other island elected officials but please stop a moment to think about our/your children and DO SOMETHING! (for a change) about this ongoing and critically urgent dangerous matter. Please don’t let money stand in the way.

I am also curious what the tourists will report on social media in regards to the friendly (but stinky) island.

If saying that your job is on the line next election will do anything to spur you into action then consider it said!
