GREAT BAY, Sint Maarten – The bizarre story of Peter Romeo Carty ended yesterday in the Court in first Instance with a $500 fine, a conditional revoking of his driver’s license for 6 months and 3 years of probation.
The 58-year old was involved in a traffic accident on Little Bay Road near the Sonesta Great Bay Beach Hotel around midnight on December 20 of last year that left the driver of the other car unconscious behind the wheel. When police arrived, Carty was lying on the street and officers soon found out that this was due to his alcohol intake.
The man spoke with a thick tongue, he could hardly stand on his legs and he smelled of alcohol. Ambulance personnel that were called to the scene, determined that there was no reason to take him to hospital. Instead, police locked him up for the night to sober up.
Carty, a security guard, maintained that he was on the right side of the road when the accident happened, but pictures of the scene proved otherwise.
Prosecutor Nanouk Lemmers considered proven that the defendant had driven under the influence of alcohol and Judge Angela agreed with her. Carty accepted his punishment without protest.
