SCELL celebrates the first graduates of journalism class    

PHILIPSBURG – The University of St. Martin (USM) School of Continuing Education and Life Long Learning (SCELL) celebrated the first graduating class of USM/SCELL’s Journalism course.

The course commenced in August 2015, and comprised of 16 weeks. Course instructor Wendie Brown facilitated the 6 scholarship recipients on the key principles and theories of Journalism, Media and Reporting.

The Journalism scholarship was established with a joint MOU inclusive of the USM under the leadership of USM President Francio Guadeloupe, Bureau of Telecommunications and Post St. Maarten (BTPSXM) A. Carty, Director, Chamber of Commerce and Industry St. Maarten (COCI) G. York, Manager of COCI Biz Center, Chamber of Commerce and Industry St. Maarten, COCI C. Conner, Director and Member of Parliament (MP) Tamara Leonard of I AM SXM.

The course was a big success. SCELL is encouraging members of the community to enroll and learn 21st century Journalism techniques, the art of reporting and current Journalism and Media practices. The course will start on August 29, and continue through January 16, 2017. The cost of the course is NAf. 960.

The graduating students were very impressed with the course and said the following:

“I feel blessed and totally grateful to USM/SCELL and all supporting organizations on seeing the need for such a valuable course,” said Cornelius “Salt” Marie.

“This Journalism course allowed me the opportunity to value and respect the art of Journalism,” stated Nzinga Lake.

“I believe that we all should be as great as we can. SCELL opens doors for all to be the best individuals they can personally for themselves and their community,” commented Charity Dunker.

“I would like to say thank you to SCELL for the Continuing Education opportunity this experience has allowed me to view Media, Journalism and reporting from a new perspective.  Thank you USM and SCELL,” said Cavinna Browne Lyndon.

SCELL Director Dr. Natasha Gittens stated: “This is yet another initiative that SCELL fully supported and implemented that showcased our genuine commitment to enhancing the St. Maarten community. We are very appreciative of Ms. Brown for her excellent facilitation of the course and we are exceptionally proud of the first graduating class.”
