SPECIAL WEATHER REPORT — On Wed Jan 13th, 2016 3:15pmET *** The National Hurricane Center will initiate advisories on Subtropical Storm Alex, located over the far eastern Atlantic Ocean, at 4 pm EST/2100 UTC. (5pm Eastern Caribbean time) .
It is the first time a cyclone has developed in the Atlantic basin during January since 1978 (back then, sub-tropical storms were not named from the official hurricane list, they were usually numbered) .
Also..of even greater significance, this is the first time on record that there are 2 existing active tropical systems in both basins (Atlantic) and Pacific (Hurricane Pali) during January.
The official hurricane season does not begin until June 1, 2016.
