St. Maarten targeting revival of Latin American tourism market

PHILIPSBURG – St. Maarten, Anguilla and St. Martin have signed a cooperative media and marketing tourism plan with Copa Airlines and Copa Vacations valued at US $400,000 to be divided among the three destinations.

According to Minister of Tourism Ingrid Arrindell, St. Maarten recently attended the 36th annual Colombian Association of Travel and Tourism Conference with a view to discussing a tourism cooperative marketing and media plan to further develop the South American market with Copa Airlines and Copa Vacations.

“Copa Vacations together with St. Maarten, St. Martin and Anguilla have signed a Memorandum of Understanding whereby the best of the Caribbean…will be marketed in the South American market,” the Minister said.

She pointed out the importance of the Latin American tourism market to St. Maarten. “The markets that are being targeted are Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Panama, Uruguay and the Panamanian market,” Arrindell said.

Arrindell also spoke about the importance of partnering with Copa Airlines. “Copa’s load factor has been declining and it was imperative that we adjusted our market strategies in order to maintain the Copa four weekly flights with the Boeing 737 via Panama via Colombia to St. Maarten,” she stated.

  1. Great news. For this to work, it needs to be done all year round. Not just when an airline like Copa threatens to pull out of SXM.

This requires long term planning, an aspect the SXM Tourist Office has not been excelling in….to put it mildly.

  2. Great news but somehow I want to see something more tangible than just a MOU being signed….

    1. What is the timeline Minister? In other words, for which period is this joint campaign planned?
    2. How will it be done? Via tour operators only? Or on-line push? Or off-line only? Or a combination?

It’s easy to announce without giving more details. At this point this is just an INTENTION not really a firm commitment.
