Student in viral video charged with five offences including assault; on $35,000 bail

A male student who appears in a viral video in a confrontation with three police officers, has appeared before a Couva Magistrate on five charges arising from the incident.

The 17-year-old student of the Carapichaima East Secondary School has been charged with the use of obscene language, resisting arrest and three counts of assault on police officers.

Police say they responded to a report of a fight at St Mary’s Junction Monday afternoon and when they arrived the student was allegedly using obscene language in their presence.

Head of Corporate Communications of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, Ellen Lewis told CNC3 Digital that the police attempted to restrain the student but he resisted.

She says the police were eventually able to subdue the student and arrest him, before laying the charges.

He appeared before a Couva magistrate this morning where the charges were read to him, following which he was granted bail in the sum of $35,000.

He is to re-appear in court on April 19th, 2016.
