Saturday, October 24th, the Friendly Longe-Côte association combined physical activity and learning self-examination As part of “October in Motion”. A morning to learn to better understand your body and adopt good habits.
On Friar's Bay beach, sport served as the common thread to a morning dedicated to breast cancer prevention. The Friendly Longe-Côte association has devised a program combining coastal walking, aquagym and practical screening workshops, with the support of the Territorial Olympic and Sports Committee of Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin (CTOS SBSM).
Midwife Elsa Petetin, a member of the association, is the originator of the concept, which includes the self-examination workshop, led with Magalie Populo, also a midwife. “Pink October is linked to breast cancer, but the goal is to avoid getting it, or to detect it very early.” For me, self-examination is the foundation “Everyone can do it at home,” she explains. Observing the appearance of their breasts, spotting unusual changes, learning the right techniques: the participants were able to to learn this practice and ask their questions. Individual consultations, in a private setting, were also offered. The aim is not to replace a medical examination, but to better understand your body and to know when to consult a doctor.
Sport and nutrition, the same fight
For Elsa, the interest of this morning also lay in the complementarity of activities“We wanted offer people as many things as possibleRather than everyone doing their own thing, they could discover coastal walking, aquagym, and also learn more about nutrition. Everything is linked to health.” A balanced breakfast, prepared by Elsa and approved with Celya, also an aquagym instructor trained in nutritionA meal was offered to participants. The CTOS SBSM provided support to the organization both in terms of personnel and technical aspects, while also taking care of the meal. “The Friendly Longe-Côte association is one of our newest members. The committee chose to support this initiative as part of its sport and health mission"And the association delivers, with a very good organization," emphasizes Aurélie Soucy, project manager at the committee. A morning on a human scalewhich will have primarily served to transmit useful techniques and to remind everyone that prevention can be practiced daily. _Vx
Gynecological care, also provided by midwives
The event was also an opportunity to reiterate that midwives are not only specialists in assisting with childbirth. They also provide gynecological care for women, including preventative examinations, at different stages of life. An important message for facilitate access to regular monitoring which therefore does not systematically require consulting a gynecologist.
