Yesterday, all the high school students discovered their new classrooms and schedules for the year, but also a new rule: a ban on using cell phones anywhere in the school. Phones must now be turned off and kept in bags. After their first morning of classes, we met with the junior and senior students at Robert Weinum High School to find out how they had received the new rules. this new measure.
Louna:
“The start of the school year went well, but there are a few annoying changes, especially regarding phones. We're no longer allowed to use them in the school. Talking to my friends outside of school is going to be more complicated. I'll manage, but I would have preferred to use them; I know how to control myself.”
Dieunicha:
“It suits me fine, I’m used to going days without my phone, I don’t care. Just for my mom, sometimes, when there are time changes, I’ll have to tell her, but that’s all. I understand the ban, but in high school, we’ll soon be adults, we’re supposed to be able to manage ourselves.”
Jahyana:
“I think it takes away some of our freedoms. For example, when classes finish early and you want to contact your parents or if there are teachers absent, it's more complicated because you have to go to the student services office… And also for memories, it's our last year and we can't take photos!”
Divenchy:
“I have mixed feelings; I think there are good points on one hand, and bad points on the other. On our phones, we can access Pronote, and if there is a change to the timetable, we can find out immediately, or if we have an emergency, we have to use our phones.”
Fredderick:
“I see the point of this rule, which is really meant to help students socialize, but I think there are quite a few problems with it, because sometimes, after several hours of class, you need to disconnect, alone, with music. You won't be able to do that anymore. Also, if there's an emergency, parents' first instinct won't be to call the school office, but rather their children. So, there are quite a few disadvantages to this rule.”
