Sixteen years ago, St. Maarten became a country within theKingdom. Today, on Constitution Day, we celebrate not only thathistoric milestone, but also the shared identity, responsibility andresilience that unite us.
We are a people shaped by storms and strengthened by the way we rise together. Hurricanes, crises, and economic challenges have tested us, yet St. Maarten has repeatedly rebuilt, adapted, andmoved forward.
We celebrate our diversity, hospitality, creativity, faith, entrepreneurial spirit, and determination. We are a small islandwith a global heart; welcoming people from arounf the world andcreating opportunity despite limited space and resources.
But patriotism also requires honesty. We must address ourvulnerabilities: natural disasters, rising costs, pressure on public services, insecurity among seniors, limited opportunities for youth, and the need to strengthen healthcare, education, and the justicechain.
These challenges are real, but they are not greater than our abilityto overcome them. We must prepare before the storm, investbefore the crisis, and act before opportunities pass.
Our future depends on resilient infrastructure, sustainbale tourism, renewable energy, digital transformation, stronger public finances, and a more diversified economy. Government must lead withdiscipline, transparency, and compassion, using every guilderresponsibly.
But no government or institution can succeed alone. Businesses, civil society, churches, schools, families, and every citizen have a role to play. Our future will be built by all of us; or it will not bebuilt at all.
Our seniors deserve dignity, care and respect. Our youth deservesafe communities, quality education, meaningful opportunities, and a voice in leadership today.
To our young people: you are not only the leaders of tomorrow, you are leaders today. Learn, serve with integrity, stand firm, anduse your ideas and courage to make a difference.
Our Constitution is more than a document. It is a promise of dignity, responsibility, justice, and self-government. It reminds usthat freedom must be protected, institutions respected, andleadership measured by how we care for one another.
Let us choose unity over division, service over self interest, andprogress over complacency. Let us build a stronger, safer, fairer, and more prosperous St. Maarten for every generation.
Happy Constitution Day, St. Maarten!
May we continue to stand firm, lead with heart and rise together. St. Maarten: Resilient by nature, united by heart, leading withpurpose.
