A new school year with the emphasis on road safety

MARIGOT: By way of a press release issued last Friday, the gendarmerie informs the population of the resumption of road checks this Monday, September 5 in the morning.

Lieutenant-colonel Maxime Wintzer-Wehekind is in charge of the process. To avoid the citizens of St. Martin to pay a fine, the commander of the gendarmerie of St. Martin and St. Barthélemy prefers to give priority to reminders and warn the population.

Like every year, the start of the new school year is accompanied by a significant increase in road traffic on the roads of St. Martin. A large number of preventive actions were carried out during the previous school year to raise awareness among road users of dangerous behaviors, among which the gendarmerie lists the non-use of helmets (including children), transportation without a suitable restraint system, holding a phone in the driver’s hand and the failure to respect priorities, which are the fundamentals of the highway code.

The gendarmerie warns that starting today, it will increase its presence on the roads during the school year. In this regard, serious situations that lead to accidents will be dealt with. For the roads to be safer on Sint Maarten, safety must be everyone’s business. The Gendarmerie is counting on you and wishes you a safe and happy return to school.
