Beware of poisoning of animals

MARIGOT: In recent weeks, several testimonies indicate the presence of poison in the area of Orient Bay and the beach of Mont Vernon.

The population still remembers the terrible massacre that took place last year at this time with a wave of poisoning that cost the lives of about fifty dogs in the space of a few days, not counting the stray animals. It was at that time in the neighborhoods of Grand Case, Cul-de-Sac, and Anse Marcel that the animals ingested the deadly poison present in a homemade pellet of mixed fish which were placed on the ground in different places.

The current association Collectif Animaux SXM was born from this incident, initially named “Balance ton tueur d’animaux SXM”. Several residents were reminded of the trauma last week when they found the bodies of an iguana and a cat at the Esmeralda Resort in Orient Bay. Last Friday, a dog was rushed to the vet after ingesting poison at Coco Beach (currently closed) and the beach near Mont Vernon.

Fortunately, the hairball was treated quickly and survived. The analysis reveals the presence of poison in chicken and fish. Remember to walk your dogs in muzzles (wire mesh, not cloth), even if the method might seem extreme, it is better to be safe than sorry… or suffer. Once the poison is ingested, depending on the quantity and weight of the animal, it only takes 5 to 20 minutes for the animal to convulse and writhe in pain until it dies. If you see anything suspicious on the ground, dead animals, or food pellets, please take pictures and inform the Collectif Animaux SXM on Facebook so they can relay the information.

Above all, never handle anything with your bare hands. Use gloves to place the poison in an airtight bag and bring it to the gendarmerie, as well as the report from your veterinarian in case of emergency care. While the man responsible for the poisonings last year was released, causing outrage to many, the other poisoners must answer for their cowardly, cruel, and criminal acts in court. If your pet is poisoned, give him a teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide with a syringe or activated charcoal and go (carefully) to the vet. Be careful with your pets. Vx
