October--The Bonaire Climate Table (Klimaattafel Bonaire) has launched a new Climate Intention, setting out eight key ambitions for a liveable, resilient, and sustainable island. The declaration, titled “Our Island, Our Responsibility,” is the outcome of months of open discussions with residents, students, civil servants, farmers, fishermen, entrepreneurs, and civil society organizations.

The Letter of Intent serves as a collective commitment to prepare Bonaire for the growing impacts of climate change while preserving the island’s unique identity, natural beauty, and community well-being.

1. Collaboration – Effective climate action depends on cooperation between citizens, organizations, businesses, and government, with attention to social differences and shared responsibility.

2. Knowledge – Building awareness and understanding of climate change empowers everyone to contribute to sustainable solutions.

3. Water – Smarter water management through rainwater collection, reduced waste, reuse initiatives, and protection of soil and sea.

4. Food Security – Strengthening local food production through innovation, entrepreneurship, and community-driven initiatives to enhance resilience.

5. Nature Management – Conserving and restoring Bonaire’s ecosystems to protect against extreme weather and promote biodiversity.

6. Cultural Heritage – Safeguarding both tangible and intangible heritage to preserve Bonaire’s cultural identity in a changing climate.

7. Energy Security – Ensuring reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy for all residents, paving the way for a clean energy future.

8. Well-being – Advancing health, safety, and quality of life through collective action across all themes.

The Climate Intention is more than a policy outline—it is a public invitation for every resident and institution to take part in shaping Bonaire’s future. The document encourages the signing of the Climate Intention to show support and commitment to the island’s sustainability journey.

By focusing on collaboration, knowledge, and shared accountability, the Bonaire Climate Table aims to unite the community around practical steps that make the island more adaptable to climate change and ensure a better quality of life for future generations.

Residents, organizations, and businesses are invited to read and sign the Climate Intention to demonstrate their commitment to a sustainable Bonaire.
