POND ISLAND – Readers of SXM Talks stated that the new location of the Motor Vehicle Inspection Center on Soualiga Road on Pond Island was pummeled in thick smoke Thursday in the late morning hours which originated from the “Baby Dump” (the dump created post Irma, adjacent to the Little League stadium).

Motorists renewing their inspection cards and staff members of the Inspection Center were seen putting a cloth over their mouths in attempt not to breathe in the heavy smoke. Many complained about both Dumps always being on fire and emitting toxic smoke.

Coincidentally, a team from Dutch National Institute for Public Health and Environment RIVM has started out with a two-week assessment of the potential health risks for the community in relation to dump fires which started on January 21. Government has requested the institute’s assistance with the assessment.
