As part of the “All Resilient to Risks” day, State services and its partners organized the Resilience Village this Saturday, October 7. Although the population unfortunately did not come en masse to the demonstration given the extreme heat, the visitors present welcomed the action, which they described as important and interesting.
Installed in the taxi parking lot on the Marigot seafront, the Resilience Village was able to come to life thanks to the collaboration of numerous partners including the 33rd Marine Infantry Regiment, the Saint-Martin Nature Reserve which offered an immersion in the waters of Saint-Martin with virtual reality headsets, the Martinique Volcanology and Seismology Observatory which had several stands dedicated to a specific phenomenon: earthquake, tsunami, floods, etc. The Tilaya company, for its part, highlighted the valuable usefulness of drones which provide crucial information to protect populations and detect threats, allowing rapid and appropriate actions. Essential for the protection of operational personnel, drones were used during emergency demonstration exercises on land, involving firefighters and law enforcement, also present during the event.
Search for victims by the dog brigade, intervention by the scientific police and emergency services on a simulated accident, visitors were able to witness in real time the speed of execution and professionalism of the emergency services. The same goes for the sea rescue demonstrations by the SNSM and the SDIS of Saint-Martin in front of the seaport.
The children did not shy away from their pleasure by getting into the fire trucks, whether that of the Saint-Martin firefighters or that of the Sint Maarten Firefighters. Several parents took the opportunity to climb into the machines, making a childhood dream come true. The stands of the Red Cross and its risk prevention program, the One Shark project, the AFPS (first aid) and other state services aroused the interest of visitors, who were particularly aware of climate change. After a poem recited by Sonia Fleming, Vincent Berton, delegated prefect of the Northern Islands, declared: “I would like to pay tribute to the partners who serve the Saint-Martin population. Our role is to ensure that there is always someone to protect you. Saint-Martin is one of the regions most exposed to risks, you must prepare as best as possible.
And preparing to live again after a cyclone is what we are offering through this resilience village. We need to anticipate climate change and forecasts. Be proud of your resilience.” Many prizes and goodies were up for grabs during the morning, several visitors left with an emergency kit, including one winner who said: “It’s important to popularize this day, thank you to the organizers.” _VX
