On July 1st, the government of Sint Maarten will commemorate the 163th anniversary of the abolition of slavery on the occasion of Emancipation Day. The official ceremony will be held within 8 to 10 hours on the historic site of Belvedere plantation, located on Oyster Pond Road, near the border.
Open to residents and visitors alikeThe event will feature official speeches, poetry readings, traditional songs and dances, as well as guided tours and a historical presentation of the estate. shuttle service will be set up from the Belvedere Residential Housing roundabout to facilitate access to the site, as parking is limited. Organized annually by the Department of Culture of Sint Maarten, in collaboration with the Slavery Memorial Committee and the St. Maarten Development FundThis event aims to preserve collective memory and raise awareness about the history of slavery, which remained a reality in Sint Maarten until July 1, 1863 (compared to May 28 in the French part of the island). Listed as a historical monument, the Belvedere Plantation is a major symbolic site. This year’s theme, “Buss di chain & free your…”, invites reflection on the legacy of slavery and its repercussions in contemporary societies.
