GREAT BAY--The St. Maarten Little League Association (SMLLA) has formed a First Responder team within its program. Five volunteers, Miguel Eusebius, Sherman Hughe, Marisol Wilson, Margriet Priest, and Chalmarie Vlaun, have offered their expertise to create the island’s first First Responder team in a sporting organization.
Drawing from their backgrounds as an Emergency Medical Technician, two registered nurses, and two nurses, the team will help ensure that every young athlete who steps onto the field does so with added protection and care. Their presence reflects a commitment to health and preparedness in youth sports.
St. Maarten Little League President and board members expressed gratitude for this collaboration. They said the initiative supports player welfare and strengthens community volunteerism.
“Our young athletes now have immediate medical expertise available at every practice and game,” said the President of SMLLA, Michel Hyman. “This partnership bridges the gap between sports and emergency readiness while offering peace of mind to parents, coaches, and spectators alike. The First Responder team will provide on-site first-aid assistance, injury assessments and care should the need arise. The plan is also for the team to engage in educational sessions for coaches and players, teaching basic safety awareness and first aid techniques aimed at building confidence in handling minor medical situations.”
This move underscores the league’s dedication to clear standards on the island. As the RBC Baseball and Softball School tournament progresses, this new chapter in St. Maarten’s Little League shows how collaboration and civic pride can build stronger programs and safer playing fields. Through this initiative, the organization affirms that teamwork extends beyond the diamond.
