MARIGOT: This Tuesday, September 6 is a sad anniversary for St. Maarten. It brings us back to September 6, 2017, the day Hurricane Irma hit.
Five years ago, to the day, we suffered one of the most powerful hurricanes ever recorded in the Atlantic zone. This date, as well as September 5th 1995 (hurricane Luis) is forever engraved in our collective memory.
Those who experienced the devastating effect of these extraordinary hurricanes have this emotional commonality and know what courage, resilience and solidarity mean. Many of you lost everything that day and pooled your strengths to raise your heads and rebuild your property. Through this individual effort, you have acted for the collective good and contributed to the recovery of this land that we love so much.
On this anniversary, my thoughts are with the 11 victims and the families who have been severely bereaved by Irma. The loss of life remains our greatest injury. 5 years later, we still feel this feeling of sadness and helplessness that came over us in the early morning, when we discovered the numerous damages. But very quickly, we gathered our strength and chose to look to the future.
I want to salute your courage because if the island is what it is today, it is thanks to you.
We still have a lot to accomplish but we have a unique opportunity, St. Maarten is a territory with an exceptional potential. We are fully aware of this and you can be sure of our commitment and determination to take concrete action over the next 5 years.
With my team of the RSM-A majority, we are doing everything in our power to finish the reconstruction and to propose new structuring projects to you, in accordance with the vision that is ours and that you have largely voted for during the last local elections.
We need this sustainable development today for our daily life but also tomorrow to leave to our children an innovative and prosperous land. We are all working on it together and we will soon have the opportunity to present you our road map.
On this Tuesday, September 6, 2022, I would like to express my gratitude to you and to our territorial institution for the work already accomplished.
Together, we will go even further to give our Friendly Island the attention and the sustainable and controlled development that it deserves and that all the citizens of our territory fully deserve.
