PHILIPSBURG: This Monday, September 12, the government of Sint Maarten launched a call for tenders for a study on the legalization of cannabis in the territory. The tender is open to organizations willing to work with the government to make cannabis legal in a responsible, safe, and feasible manner.
Each proposal submitted as part of the application must have a strong focus on conducting several studies on the effects of cannabis legalization before concrete decisions can be made on how cannabis will be legalized.
The Minister of Public Health, Social Development, and Labour, Omar E.C. Ottley, would like to invite and welcome proposals that work towards a regulated and legalized cannabis industry. The objective is to receive proposals from local or international companies that wish to work in conjunction with the government of Sint Maarten to establish a legal cannabis industry in the territory in such a way that many of the economic, social, and medical benefits remain local and directly benefit the people of Sint Maarten.
Interested organizations are invited to send an email to cannabis@sintmaartengov.org to have the application package sent to them. The official launch of the call for proposals began this Monday, September 12, 2022, for a period of 90 days. All proposals submitted by the deadline, December 5, 2022, will be thoroughly reviewed and evaluated, based on the information provided in the proposal, as well as the list of deliverables to be included, which is disclosed in the application package. In France, the issue of cannabis legalization appears to be stalled.
The law of December 31, 1970, prohibits the production, sale, purchase, and use of cannabis, making it one of the most repressive legislation on the continent, even though an estimated 1.5 million people use cannabis regularly. In an article published on August 10 in “Le Monde”, a group of 31 senators from the socialist, ecologist and republican groups committed to launching a consultation process to submit a bill to legalize cannabis while opposing its decriminalization. According to the collective, this is a social issue that the public authorities must address.
