UNUSUAL / World record: the very first Birkin bag sold for €8,6 million | FAXINFO

The world of luxury has reached a new milestone. Last Thursday, the very first Hermès Birkin bag sold for €8,582 million at an auction organized by Sotheby’s.

Designed in 1984 for Jane Birkin herself, this iconic bag thus becomes the most expensive fashion accessory ever sold at auction, easily dethroning the previous record held by a Kelly bag in crocodile and diamonds, which sold for €438.000.

This unique piece, the origin of the French leather goods maker’s iconic model, retains the marks of its illustrious owner’s daily life: patinated leather, closed rings, a non-removable shoulder strap, and even an integrated nail clipper. This prototype, engraved with the initials JB, illustrates the rare combination of functionality and elegance. It also embodies a now-legendary story: that of a Paris-London flight where Jane Birkin, a young mother, complained that she couldn’t find a practical bag. At her side, Jean-Louis Dumas, then CEO of Hermès, sketched the model that would bear his name.

Forty years after its creation, the Birkin remains an absolute symbol of refinement and exclusivity. Produced in limited editions, it is passed down like a work of art, often more coveted than worn. This record sale confirms the Birkin’s place not only in the history of fashion, but also as an exceptional collectible.
