SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY) - Jewel Daal and Erion Peterson are not simply competing at Taste of the Caribbean 2026. They are carrying the names, traditions, and achievements of two families that have helped shape St. Maarten's culinary identity.
There is something particularly special about St. Maarten's return to the prestigious Taste of the Caribbean competition after a nine-year absence. Beyond the excitement of showcasing our island's extraordinary culinary talent, this year's team tells a beautiful story of family, heritage, determination, and the passing of the torch from one generation to the next.
Among the talented professionals representing St. Maarten/St. Martin in Barbados this November are two individuals whose family names are already deeply connected to the island's culinary history: Senior Chef Jewel Daal, daughter of the legendary Yvette of Yvette's Restaurant, and bartender Erion Peterson, son of the celebrated, award-winning mixologist Paul Peterson.
Their participation represents far more than a competition. It is a celebration of where we have come from, the people who paved the way, and the next generation determined to carry our island's reputation forward.
Jewel Daal: From Yvette's Kitchen to Her Own Culinary Legacy
For generations of St. Maarteners and countless visitors, the name Yvette has been synonymous with authentic island cooking.
Yvette's Restaurant is more than a place to enjoy a meal. It represents the warmth of St. Maarten hospitality, the richness of our traditional recipes, and the kind of home-cooked Caribbean food that brings people together around a table.
And now, Yvette's daughter, Jewel Daal, is proudly continuing that tradition.
But Jewel's story is not simply about following in her mother's footsteps. It is about taking the foundation that was laid before her and building something distinctly her own.
As the owner of TJ's Cassava Coal Pot, Jewel has established her own place in St. Maarten's culinary landscape, celebrating traditional island flavors while expressing her personal passion and creativity as a chef.
The restaurant itself speaks to the authenticity of her journey. Her cooking pays tribute to the food, flavors, and traditions that are part of our island's identity.
There is something particularly meaningful about a daughter growing up with a family name associated with great food and then developing the confidence, talent, and determination to establish a culinary reputation of her own.
Jewel is not merely preserving her mother's legacy. She is expanding it.
And now, as Senior Chef on the national culinary team, she will take that family heritage beyond St. Maarten's shores and onto a prestigious Caribbean stage.
What makes this story even more special is that TJ's Cassava Coal Pot has already served as a training ground for the team as members prepare their recipes and culinary creations for the competition.
One can only imagine the pride of a mother seeing her daughter represent the very island whose culinary traditions she helped keep alive.
From Yvette's Restaurant to TJ's Cassava Coal Pot, and now to Taste of the Caribbean 2026, this is a story of a family legacy continuing to grow.
Erion Peterson: Following in the Footsteps of a Caribbean Champion
On the other side of the culinary stage, another remarkable family story is unfolding.
When Erion Peterson steps forward to represent St. Maarten/St. Martin in the bartending competition, he will be following a path already made famous by his father, Paul Peterson.
Paul Peterson is no ordinary bartender in St. Maarten's hospitality history. He is one of the island's most accomplished mixologists, having represented St. Maarten internationally and earned numerous accolades for his exceptional talent.
In 2009, Paul was crowned Bartender of the Year at Taste of the Caribbean, a remarkable achievement that placed St. Maarten firmly in the regional spotlight. His competitive success extended across multiple appearances, and he went on to become internationally recognized for his craft.
Now, 17 years after that celebrated 2009 victory, his son Erion is preparing to represent the same island at the same prestigious competition.
What a powerful full-circle moment for a family.
For Erion, the challenge is undoubtedly exciting. His father has already demonstrated what talent, discipline, innovation, and confidence can achieve on the international stage.
But Erion has his own opportunity to make a name for himself.
At the recent SHTA mixer at Kooyman, Erion presented three cocktail creations for feedback as part of his preparations for Barbados. It was an opportunity to demonstrate his creativity and commitment to refining his craft.
And although he carries a well-known surname, he will ultimately be judged on his own skills, originality, presentation, and ability to capture the essence of the Caribbean in a glass.
There is something especially inspiring about witnessing a son take up a craft in which his father achieved regional distinction.
Paul Peterson helped set the standard. Now Erion Peterson has the opportunity to write the next chapter.
His journey is a reminder that a great family legacy is not simply something inherited. It must be nurtured, developed, and ultimately earned through one's own dedication.
Two Families, One Island, and a Legacy Worth Celebrating
What makes these two stories so compelling is what they represent for St. Maarten.
Our island's culinary reputation was not built overnight. It was built by generations of hardworking chefs, restaurant owners, bartenders, hospitality professionals, and families who dedicated their lives to sharing the flavors and hospitality of St. Maarten with the world.
People like Yvette Hyman, whose contribution extended beyond her restaurant and into the preservation of our culinary heritage through her cookbook, From Yvette's Kitchen to Your Table, published in 2011.
And people like Paul Peterson, who demonstrated that a bartender from our small island could stand alongside the Caribbean's finest and emerge a champion.
Today, their children are helping write the next chapter.
There is also a beautiful connection between their journeys and our island's binational identity. French or Dutch side, our culinary traditions belong to all of us. They reflect the many cultures, families, ingredients, and histories that make St. Maarten/St. Martin unique.
As Jewel and Erion prepare for Barbados, they join fellow team members Pastry Chef Djaya Coupey and Junior Chef Jamal Dormoy under the guidance of experienced coach Renata de Weever. Together, they represent an exciting new chapter in St. Maarten's culinary story.
The competition, scheduled for November 16–19, 2026, will bring together culinary professionals from across the Caribbean.
More Than Medals, A Legacy for Future Generations
Of course, we would love to see our team return home with medals and trophies.
But something important has already been achieved.
Young St. Maarteners can look at Jewel and Erion and see that our island's culinary traditions are not simply stories from the past. They are living opportunities for the future.
They can see that a young person raised around a family restaurant can become a respected chef, entrepreneur, and national representative.
They can see that the son of a champion bartender can pursue the same craft and aspire to achieve excellence on his own terms.
And perhaps most importantly, they can see that being born on a small Caribbean island places no limit on how far talent, hard work, and ambition can take you.
Jewel Daal carries the flavors of her mother's kitchen. Erion Peterson carries the inspiration of his father's championship achievements. Both carry the pride of St. Maarten.
As they head to Barbados, let us celebrate not only the competitors but also the generations who came before them and the young people who will follow.
Because the greatest legacy is not simply what we accomplish in our lifetime.
It is what we inspire the next generation to become.
To Jewel, Erion, Djaya, Jamal, and Coach Renata: may you compete with confidence, creativity, unity, and pride.
You are representing more than a culinary team. You are representing our history, our culture, our families, and our beautiful island.
St. Maarten/St. Martin is cheering you on!
