SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY) – President of the NAPB-Sint Maarten Marcus Pantophlet, released his Justice Day message on Friday, July 17, 2026. “As we observe Justice Day, we are reminded that justice is not measured solely by the enforcement of our laws or the verdicts handed down by our courts. Justice is reflected in the strength and integrity of our entire criminal justice system—from policing and prosecution to corrections and rehabilitation.
“The recent findings of the Law Enforcement Council regarding the Sint Maarten Prison underscore the challenges that continue to confront our justice system. While the report acknowledges positive developments, including the renovation of isolation facilities, the launch of the Tur Cos Ta Posibel reintegration program, and the progress toward constructing a new prison, it also highlights that many critical recommendations remain unimplemented years after they were first made.
“As President of NAPB-Sint Maarten, I view these findings with serious concern. Police officers dedicate themselves every day to protecting our communities, investigating crimes, and bringing offenders before the courts. However, public safety cannot be achieved by policing alone. A correctional system that lacks sufficient staffing, effective rehabilitation programs, proper oversight, and adequate resources weakens the entire justice chain and places additional pressure on every law enforcement agency.
“Justice also means ensuring that correctional officers and all law enforcement personnel have safe working conditions, the tools they need to perform their duties professionally, and institutions capable of fulfilling their responsibilities. Equally important is providing inmates with meaningful opportunities for rehabilitation and reintegration, as reducing recidivism ultimately creates safer communities for everyone.
“Justice Day should therefore serve not only as a celebration of our justice institutions but also as a call to action. The Government and all stakeholders must demonstrate the commitment necessary to fully implement the recommendations of the Law Enforcement Council and the CPT. Sustainable investment, effective leadership, and accountability are essential if we are to build a justice system that commands public confidence.
“On this Justice Day, I extend my sincere appreciation to every police officer, immigration officer, customs officer, correctional officer, Prosecutor, member of the judiciary, and all those who serve within our justice sector. Your dedication, professionalism, and sacrifice are the foundation upon which public safety and the rule of law are built.
“Let this day renew our collective commitment to strengthening our institutions, protecting human dignity, supporting those who uphold the law, and ensuring that justice in Sint Maarten is not only delivered but experienced by every member of our society.”
