THE NETHERLANDS (THE HAGUE) – Minister Plenipotentiary Drs. Gracita R. Arrindell, extends her heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, former colleagues and loved ones of the late Drs. Cornelius James, affectionately known as Cor James, who served as the first Director of the Cabinet of the Minister Plenipotentiary of Sint Maarten in The Hague following the country's attainment of autonomous status within the Kingdom of the Netherlands on October 10, 2010.

Minister Arrindell acknowledges the important role that Drs. James played during a defining period in Sint Maarten's constitutional and institutional development, when the country was establishing the governmental structures necessary to exercise its new responsibilities within the Kingdom.

As the inaugural Director of the Cabinet, Drs. James was part of the pioneering team entrusted with establishing and developing Sint Maarten's official representation in the Netherlands.

Working alongside Sint Maarten's first Minister Plenipotentiary, the Honorable Mathias S. Voges, he contributed to the development of the Cabinet's administrative and operational foundations, helping to position the institution’s capacity to carry out its responsibilities in representing the interests of Sint Maarten.

The establishment of the Cabinet following 10-10-10 marked an important milestone in Sint Maarten's constitutional history. It created a permanent institutional presence in The Hague through which the country could engage with the Government of the Netherlands, other Kingdom partners, diplomatic representatives, and European institutions.

During his tenure, James was involved in coordinating and facilitating various governmental and institutional engagements, including matters related to Kingdom relations, European affairs, education, student affairs, and cooperation with Dutch municipalities and other organizations.

His contributions during the Cabinet's formative years helped establish working relationships and administrative practices that supported Sint Maarten's evolving role as an autonomous country within the Kingdom.

Minister Arrindell noted that the contributions of individuals who served during the country's earliest years of constitutional transition deserve to be remembered and acknowledged.

“On behalf of the Cabinet of the Minister Plenipotentiary of Sint Maarten, I extend my sincere and heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of Drs. Cornelius James. Drs. James belonged to a generation of public servants who helped lay the institutional foundations of our country following the historic constitutional transition of October 10, 2010.

“As the first Director of the Cabinet in The Hague, he assumed responsibilities at a time when Sint Maarten was establishing its place as an autonomous country within the Kingdom. This required dedication, institutional knowledge, professionalism, and a commitment to public service.

“Today, as we reflect on his passing, we also recognize his contribution to the development of the very institution that continues to represent Sint Maarten's interests in the Netherlands.

“His service forms part of the institutional history of Sint Maarten, and his contribution during those formative years will not be forgotten,” Minister Arrindell stated.

Minister Arrindell further noted that remembering the contributions of former public servants such as Drs. James provides an opportunity to reflect on the importance of institutional continuity, public service, and preserving the history of Sint Maarten's constitutional development.

“The passing of Drs. Cornelius James is a moment to acknowledge not only his life and service, but also the contributions of those who helped build the institutions that serve our country today. We are grateful for his dedication and the role he played in the early development of Sint Maarten's representation in The Hague.

“May his family find comfort in knowing that his contribution to our country's institutional development is recognized and appreciated,” Minister Arrindell concluded.

The Minister Plenipotentiary and the staff of the Cabinet of Sint Maarten in The Hague extend their deepest sympathies to the family, friends and loved ones of the late Drs. Cornelius James during this difficult time.
