SINT MAARTEN (SIMPSON BAY-AIRPORT) - Princess Juliana International Airport (PJIA) proudly welcomed approximately 600 members of the community to its Airport Fire fighters Open Day, held in celebration of Fire fighters Week.The event, which exceeded all expectations, provided the public with a unique opportunity to step behind the scenes and experience the vital work carried out every day by the airport's Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) team.
Originally anticipating around 300 attendees, the event drew nearly double that number, demonstrating strong interest from the community to learn more about the dedicated professionals who work around the clock to keep the airport, our passengers and all employees safe at PJIA.
Throughout the morning, visitors enjoyed live emergency response demonstrations, explored specialized airport firefighting vehicles/equipment and met with the teams responsible for ensuring our emergency preparedness. Children and families were treated to popcorn, cotton candy, refreshments and complimentary ice cream provided by Aunt Clara, creating an exciting and educational experience for all.
The event was further strengthened through the participation of the Government Fire fighter department and Ambulance Service, Grand Case airport, the Royal Dutch marines all of which joined the airport firefighters showcasing emergency response demonstrations and highlighting the close cooperation between all emergency services.
"Today was about opening our doors to the community and giving people a firsthand look at the dedication, professionalism and teamwork that keep PJIA operating safely every single day. We sincerely thank everyone who attended and all of our partners who helped make this event such a tremendous success," said Michael Cleaver, Chief Executive Officer of Princess Juliana International Airport.
Airport Fire Chief Pauletta Silvanico expressed his pride with the overwhelming turnout and the opportunity to showcase the work of his team.
"I couldn't be happier with today's outcome," said Silvanico. "We expected around 300 visitors, but welcoming approximately 600 people attended which exceeded our expectations. Our fire fighters dedicate themselves every day to protecting lives, aircraft and airport operations, often working behind the scenes. It was incredibly rewarding to share our profession with the community and inspire both young and old. The support we received today means a great deal to our entire team."
The Open Day reinforced PJIA's commitment to community engagement allowing residents and visitors to experience firsthand the extensive training, equipment and preparedness required to respond to emergencies in an airport environment. Through interactive demonstrations and educational activities attendees gained valuable insight into the critical role that airport fire fighters play in maintaining one of the Caribbean's busiest gateways.
Following the overwhelming success of this year's event, PJIA is pleased to announce that the Airport Fire fighters Open Day will continue throughout the week and as scheduled annual event. Looking ahead, 2027 marks the 30th anniversary of PJIA’s Fire and Rescue Department, making next year's celebration even more special. The airport invites the community to mark their calendars and join in celebrating this important milestone next year.
