SINT MAARTEN (SUCKER GARDEN) – The members of the Sint Maarten Lions club held their annual change of board event at Frenchy Ludo’s Restaurant, on June 22, 2019.
Distinguished members of the French Lions clubs and the membership of the Sint Maarten Lions club gathered to witness the change of board where immediate past president Mrs. Carmen Lake turned over the reign of the club to Ms.Oralie Boirard.
The new president joined the organization in 2012 and after 1 year, joined the board of directors upon invitation and have since served the club in different functions including secretary one of the most challenging posts held in the club.
The theme selected for this year’s signature project is “Our Youth – Our Future”. Lion Oralie who is a seasoned educator, mother and recently grandmother mentioned in her speech that this years’ focus would be on providing information to parents/ guardians and the Youth on the United Nations Convention “Rights of the Child”. This program will focus on an awareness campaign highlighting one of the Children’s Rights monthly.
One such theme is the ‘Right to an Education’, which will be the focus for the month of August 2019.The first project for this year will see the Lions Club ‘Back to School Rally’, where members will be out welcoming students of (1) primary and (1) secondary school on Dutch Sint Maarten.
Lions International Day of the Youth is on August 12, and this year the day coincides with the first day of the school year 2019 – 2020. Immediately following the first project, the president will hold a press conference inviting the former president, Lion Carmen and a number of students who received donations from the club, to participate in several summer activities on the island and abroad.
All recipients including the two students of the Lions 2018 – 2019 Students Excellence Awards, who traveled to Canada to attend Camp Kearney summer program, will have the opportunity to share their experiences. The president will be on hand and will officially launch the projects in detail.
Some of the other projects planned for 2019 – 2020 are the famous Lion Nelson van de Linde Senior Citizen party in October, the annual Lion Wally Christmas Spectacular Lions Bingo and a car raffle in December, and on March 2020, the club will host the annual Lion Rudy Hoeve Health Fair with a new twist.

President Boirard takes this opportunity in asking the community of Sint Maarten to continue supporting the Lions Club with their Fundraisings. Funds raised from these events would allow the club to continue “To Serve” the community of Sint Maarten with the various projects.
