SAINT-MARTIN (MARIGOT) — Two young residents of Saint-Martin, Romario Benjamin and Lisette Richardson, have joined a BPJEPS Basketball training program at the Tony Parker Adéquat Academy (TPAA) in Lyon, thanks to a collaboration between two local associations committed to youth development through sport.
The initiative is the result of a partnership between the Let's Do It (LDI) association, chaired by Mr. Bryan Kenroy, with Mr. Samuel Gumbs serving as vice-president in charge of development, and the association Le Chemin de la Jeunesse, chaired by Mr. Sylvio Richardson-Irish and directed by Ms. Milinda Jouenne.
About the partnering associations
Let's Do It works for youth and development through sport. Le Chemin de la Jeunesse develops cultural, social, sporting and recreational activities, promotes intergenerational connections, and notably supports young people toward social and professional integration.
Together, and with the support of the Tony Parker Adéquat Academy, the two organizations secured training placements for Benjamin and Richardson.
About the training
The Tony Parker Adéquat Academy is an institution based in Lyon offering academic, post-baccalaureate and apprenticeship programs. It notably provides a BPJEPS Basketball qualification for future sports instructors, activity leaders and basketball coaches.
The BPJEPS Basketball (Professional Certificate in Youth, Popular Education and Sport) is a professional qualification enabling its holders to supervise and lead basketball activities. The program trains candidates in the preparation, delivery and evaluation of sessions adapted to different audiences, as well as in the management of sports projects.
During their travels, Romario Benjamin and Lisette Richardson also received intensive training in leading and planning sessions. This experience strengthens their coaching skills and their ability to prepare sessions tailored to the participants.
Professional outcome
Upon graduation, the two trainees can register as sports instructors. After their application has been reviewed — including verification of their diploma and good character — they will be issued a professional sports instructor card. This card will allow them to coach basketball for remuneration, within the scope of their qualifications.
A long-term commitment
This action illustrates the desire of both associations to train local coaches and to sustainably support the development of basketball in Saint-Martin.
