SINT MAARTEN (POND ISLAND) - The University of St. Martin’s hosted its first Unity Evening of the Fall 2026 semester on Tuesday, September 1, bringing students and faculty together for an hour of encouragement, team building, and connection.
The evening was organized by the current Student Government Association (SGA) to give students an opportunity to step away from their regular classroom activities, interact with one another and begin the semester feeling motivated and supported.
Throughout the hour-long session, students participated in team-building activities. They worked together in groups, competed for prizes, and enjoyed the opportunity to connect with students outside of their usual classes.
Several faculty members also joined the activities, adding to the lively and welcoming atmosphere. Dean of the General Liberal Arts and Education Division, Mrs. Juliana Shipley-Hodge, also addressed the students. She welcomed them to the new semester and encouraged them to become more involved in university life by participating in upcoming activities, including USM’s involvement in the Cultural Parade scheduled for November.
The SGA also used the opportunity to update students on upcoming activities, including Lit Night @ USM celebrating Literature Month, and reminded them to register for their USM student ID cards and passes. Drinks and pizza were provided for those in attendance, along with a selection of homemade desserts prepared by SGA member Ms. Charisse Woodley.
SGA member Tryphena Andrews encouraged her fellow students to remain focused throughout the semester, strive for A’s, and never give up when challenges arise. Students were reminded that academic success requires determination, consistency, and the willingness to keep moving forward, even when the semester becomes demanding.
As World Suicide Prevention Day approaches on September 10, the SGA ended the evening by giving students a meaningful challenge. Students were encouraged to reach out to a friend or someone they had not heard from in a while, check in on them and take the time to have a genuine conversation.
The challenge served as a reminder that staying connected and showing care for others can make a meaningful difference. Sometimes, a simple message or conversation is enough to let someone know they are not alone.
Proud alumni and current faculty Ms. Marcellia Henry, a strong supporter of Unity Evening, believes students need opportunities to connect outside of the classroom.
Activities such as Unity Evening allow students to build relationships, relax, and feel a stronger sense of belonging within the USM community. The next SGA Unity Evening is scheduled to take place in October.
Through these gatherings, the SGA hopes to continue creating opportunities for students to connect, encourage one another and strengthen the sense of community at USM.
