SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY) - On Thursday, September 10, 2026, the President of Parliament, the Hon. Sarah A. Wescot-Williams, received a courtesy visit from the newly appointed President of the Joint Court of Justice for Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten, and Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba, Mr. Sigmar A. Carmelia, at the House of Parliament.
Mr. Carmelia was accompanied by the Vice-President of the Joint Court on Sint Maarten, Mr. Joost Veerman. During the courtesy call, the delegations discussed matters of mutual interest, including legislation that is important for the effective functioning of the courts and the legal system.
The discussion also focused on the importance of the three branches of government, namely the legislative, executive, and judicial branches, and opportunities to further educate the public on their respective roles within the democratic system.
The President of Parliament and the President of the Joint Court of Justice also exchanged views on the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI), emphasizing the importance of its responsible use and its potential impact on governance, institutions, and society as a whole.
The ceremonial installation session of Mr. S.A. Carmelia as President of the Joint Court of Justice is scheduled to take place on October 16, 2026, in Curaçao.
