WITU Launches Toy and School Supplies Drive for Students Affected by Hurricane Melissa | SOUALIGA NEWSDAY

SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY) - The Windward Islands Teachers’ Union (WITU) is calling on the community to join them in a spirit of compassion and solidarity to support students and families who have been affected by Category 5 Hurricane Melissa.

In response to the devastation caused by the hurricane, WITU has launched a Toy and School Supplies Drive to help children rebuild a sense of normalcy as they return to school.

Many families have lost not only their homes but also the essential tools their children need to learn and play.

Additionally, WITU will be reaching out to all schools to participate in a letter writing initiative, dubbed “Cheer Mail”. Students from primary and secondary school are encouraged to write letters of inspiration to the students in affected areas.

These letters of encouragement will be distributed along with the donated items, helping to lift the spirits of children who are struggling in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa.

The public is asked to follow our Facebook page, Windward Islands Teachers’ Union, for more information regarding the drop-off times at their office in Madame Estate or persons interested in assisting can email witu.teachers@gmail.com

A small act of kindness, a toy, a backpack or a letter can make a world of difference to a child who has lost everything.
