GREAT BAY/MARIGOT:— Performance artist and leading choreographer Clara Reyes is wearing both creative hats at the 40th-anniversary concert of Lasana Sekou as St. Martin’s author of over 20 books, on Friday, November 30 and Saturday, December 1, 2018.
The show is going to be “epic,” said Reyes about the poetry, dance-theater-music, and drama recital, set to start each night at 8 PM, at John Larmonie Center on Long Wall Road, next to LB Scott Sports Auditorium.
Reyes has been creating with the National Institute of Arts (NIA) dance-theater pieces to select poems by Sekou, said Shujah Reiph, producer of the concert.
The award-winning NIA will open the concert with an original Reyes choreography to Sekou’s “The Cubs Are in the Fields,” with music by Angelo Rombley, said Reiph.
Reyes will also transform herself into a nonagenarian, in a rocking chair, to dramatize Sekou’s “Great Grandmother T,” a monologue about one woman’s real-life experiences during the Traditional St. Martin period.
Sekou will recite from his books of poetry and fictions, starting with his first book from 1978; and from his upcoming book of Hurricane Irma poems, said Jacqueline Sample, his publisher at House of Nehesi (HNP).
Reiph has reiterated that “Lasana has performed on five continents. His poetry and short stories are studied in universities in the Caribbean, Venezuela, Mexico, the USA, Canada, and in Europe. But I still think that when he gives the rare solo reading of his work at home, it’s in St. Martin where he puts most of his heart and soul.”
Admission to the literary show is $15 in advance or $20 at the gate, said Reiph. Tickets are available at NIA, John Larmonie Center, and SOS Radio 95.5 FM (across from the ball field), Rue de Hollande, Marigot.
Lasana M. Sekou Live @ his 40th anniversary “is powered by Conscious Lyrics, House of Nehesi Publishers, SOS Radio, and NIA,” said Reiph. Proceeds from the ticket sales will be contributed to HNP’s upcoming book of Hurricane Irma poems and the 17th annual St. Martin Book Fair 2019, said Sample.
