PHILIPSBURG:--- On the 31st of March and the 1st of April, 2016, the Centrale Bank van Curaçao en Sint Maarten (CBCS) will host its first central banking conference at the Sonesta Maho Beach Resort in Sint Maarten. The conference will feature presentations and lectures by central bankers, economists, and leaders in the private, public, and academic sectors from across the Caribbean region and further abroad, such as CEMLA and CARTAC.

The general theme for the conference will be the challenges and opportunities of Caribbean central banking in the aftermath of the 2008 global financial crisis.

Topics for the conference will include financial stability, macroeconomic prudence, behavioral economics, and monetary unions in a Caribbean context.

The speakers are Mr. Trevor Brathwaite (Deputy Governor of the ECCB) with a presentation about monetary unions in Caribbean context; Dr. Shelton Nicholls (CARTAC) and Dr. Alberto Ortiz Bolaños (CEMLA), both of whom will elaborate on financial stability and resilience; Prof. Dr. Henriette Prast (University of Tilburg) and Dr. Dave Seerattan (Caribbean Centre for Money and Finance and University of the West Indies) who will present on behavioral economics and financial literacy; and Ms. Carey-Anne Williams (Bank of Jamaica), who will speak about evaluating the transmission mechanism of monetary policy in Jamaica.

Mr. Richard Gibson, Minister of Finance of Sint Maarten and Dr. Emsley Tromp, President of the Centrale Bank van Curacao en Sint Maarten will provide the opening remarks. On Friday, April 1st, the program features an open session in the afternoon for the public, describing the tasks and responsibilities of the CBCS.
