Pond Island:— SCELL, The University of St Martin’s School of Continuing Education & Lifelong Learning is hosting the Gender Equality round table discussion on Saturday, June 4, 2016 at 5pm, USM, Room 202. The event is FREE of charge, and will be led by Dr. Gittens Director of SCELL in partnership with the Women’s Island Network (WIN). This event promises to promote awareness on the importance of Gender Equality in St. Maarten by unifying women’s organizations on the island. The theme for the night would be “Sisters United for Gender Equality” and will focus on the Sustainable Development Goals of The Commission on the Status of Women, (CSW).

SCELL invites both men and women to come out for a night of groundbreaking discussions. “Gender equality is not a woman’s issue, it is a human issue. It affects us all.” Hereby, participants will review the objectives then determine as a unifying movement which sustainable goals will be implemented on St. Maarten in 2016. Earlier this year in March Dr. Gittens was featured speaker at the International Women’s Day celebration hosted by Women’s Desk where she addressed the UN’s theme “Step it up for gender Equality”, and recommended meaningful and practical ways to realize the UN’s Sustainable Development goal for Gender Equality here on St. Maarten.

In continuance to her vision, Dr. Gittens mentioned Gender Equality is an important topic globally. She states, it was an honor to be selected as the Keynote speaker for the Women’s International Day celebration in St. Maarten. I have accepted and embraced my role as a proud advocate and ambassador of Gender Equality in St. Maarten. It is not a choice for me but a genuine passion and that is why I am proud to lead this thought provoking, informative discussion. As a progressive island we must unify both men and women to cooperatively promote the United Nation’s Sustainable Development goals and plan initiatives and events to promote Gender Equality awareness on St. Maarten for measurable change.
