More Movement for the Elderly this Saturday to Commemorate Caribbean Wellness Day.

GREAT BAY (DCOMM):— More Movement for the Elderly, is an activity planned to commemorate Caribbean Wellness Day (CWD) on Saturday, September 10.

The activity has been organized and coordinated by Collective Prevention Services (CPS), a department from the Sint Maarten Ministry of Public Health, Social Development and Labour, the White and Yellow Cross Foundation (WYCCF), Windward Islands Physical Therapist Association (WIPTA) and I&I Fitness.

Senior citizens are invited to come out to the St. Martin’s Home at St. John’s Estate, Nr. 6 Peter Prinsen on Saturday for More Movement for the Elderly Fitness.

The Saturday activity is being coordinated by WIPTA from 10.30AM to 12.00PM at the aforementioned address.

In almost every country, the proportion of people aged over 60 years is growing faster than any other age group, as a result of both longer life expectancy and declining fertility rates.

Physical activity is defined as any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that require energy expenditure. Physical inactivity has been identified as the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality causing an estimated 3.2 million deaths globally.
The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Heads of Summit on Chronic Diseases in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, September 2007, established Caribbean Wellness Day.
Caribbean Wellness Day is observed every year on the second Saturday of September.
Inaugurated in 2008, Caribbean Wellness Day (CWD) is an annual event which provides an opportunity to increase the awareness of the non-communicable diseases (NCDs) burden in the Caribbean; mobilise and strengthen public, private, and civil society partnerships for NCDs; promote multi country, multisectoral activities in support of wellness; and showcase national and community level activities to promote healthy living and encourage residents to develop good health practices.
