Great Bay:---  In its continuous effort to serve the people of our country the Sint Maarten Christian Party joined the DOET volunteer initiative this past weekend. Our project was to build a greenhouse for the I Too Can Learn Foundation in Dutch Quarter. It is the desire of the principal, Beverley Gibbs that her autistic and special needs students get hands-on experience in planting and taking care of plants and vegetables. Her goal is for her students to be able to eat from their own vegetable garden and to sell plants to help generate some income for their school.
The rain on Saturday morning did not deter the large number of volunteers who came out with great enthusiasm to help Beverley and her students fulfill their dream. Members of the Sint Maarten Christian Party, the staff of the Government Accountant Bureau (SAOB), members of the Generation New Status STM Drum Band led by Youmay, as well as students of the school were present. While the men were building, the women served, the students put seeds and baby plants in pots and the drum band played on the corner of the Zorg and Rust Road raising funds for the school.
Saturday’s volunteer effort was a wonderful experience and it goes to show that people can indeed come together and make a positive impact in our communities. In the picture you see a representative of the SAOB, representatives of the Sint Maarten Christian Party and a representative of the Generation New Status STM Drum Band.
The Sint Maarten Christian Party would like to commend DOET for this initiative and encourages the entire community to participate in the next DOET’s volunteer effort. Party leader, Wycliffe Smith said that the Sint Maarten Christian Party was pleased to be able to serve Sint Maarten in this manner and that the Party plans to assist with more of such community efforts in the future. We believe that together we can make a difference and bring about the change we all desire for Sint Maarten.
