GREAT BAY—Art Saves Lives celebrated its 5th annual presentation at the Philipsburg Cultural Center, Saturday. The theme “Continental Drift” came to life through time lapse rhythms, poetry, and dance. It explored the natural and political forces that have shifted, inspired, and shaped human kind.
The stage was set with pieces created by the students, and as each performance graced the stage, the audience was left with the urge to dance, sing, and clap – wanting more of everything that was beautiful and entertaining about the show. However, it wasn’t only entertainment, the night was also a powerful and educational experience as the performers walked the audience through the future, present, and past of the island’s culture.
Using art as a bridge to education, the Art Saves Lives Program (ASLP) seeks to facilitate personal empowerment through creativity by engaging, developing, and reinforcing the students’ own imagination – which is why it is important to support the arts. This collaborative project selected renowned artists from around the world who use the arts to introduce participants to global and local traditions and empower them with the life skills necessary to effectively deal with the demands and challenges of everyday life. The project also provides guidance for young artists with aspirations in pursuing a career in the arts. This year, the students spent a week being exposed to different art forms and the delivery of what they learned was incredible.
