GREAT BAY – The University of St. Martin (USM) hosted a joint graduation ceremony for the USM Preparatory Program (PRE-USM) and General Educational Development (GED) class of 2017, Saturday.
“I was very pleased when I walked in and saw a room full of people. It is very important to support the youth,” stated Wycliffe Smith, Leader of the Sint Maarten Christian Party, “Graduates, you are very important. That’s why we left everything that we were doing, to come and celebrate with you and to congratulate you on this great achievement. I want to let you know that education is very important, and you have given yourself that gift. And this is a gift, that’s not just for you, but something to impact others. You will impact your friends, your family, your community, and even your nation.”
Ife Badejo, USM alumna, also shared words of encouragement. “In life, you will come across a couple of T-crossings, and here are a few T-crossings that I would like for you to think about. Trust in a higher power – in something that is bigger than yourself. Trust that when things go bad, you can ultimately end up in good. You also have to trust yourself, because there will be times when failure comes, but you have to trust yourself to try again until you succeed. And trust people, because no man is an island and you will need others to help you.”
The Pre-USM and GED students were presented their certificates by Oldine Bryson-Pantophlet, Geneve Phillip-Durham, and Eleonore Ferrol. After the ceremony, the participants were invited to a cocktail reception in the USM courtyard.
