With the appointment of now Chief Commissioner Carl John to the top job at the police force, St. Maarten has one of its own managing one of the most critical organizations on the island.
The appointment was pending already for some time and the news that it was taken unanimously on all levels during the selection process confirms that John is the best man for the job.
Under Peter de Witte, who will remain in the service of the justice ministry, the police force have taken a sharp turn for the better and it is now up to his successor to build on this solid foundation.
The main challenge remains bringing the force up to the strength the country needs and deserves. Unfortunately, John has no control over that process because this is a matter of resources – and they remain scarce.
