Editorial: Stern warning

The conviction of former Prime Minister of Curacao Gerrit Schotte comes as no surprise; the evidence is simply too overwhelming.

From a community point of view, the case shows that nobody is above the law. That’s a good thing and with this conviction, the judicial system has sent a stern warning to others who are thinking about filling Schotte’s shoes.

That the trial is ‘political’ is the standard cry of any politician who is caught with his hand in the cookie jar or who has otherwise violated the law. We will see the same in St. Maarten with someone who is a bit lower on the political totem pole, MP Silvio Matser.

They all forget a bit too easy that there is a difference between political prosecution and prosecuting a politician.
