Hurricane season is here. It has started on June 1st and will be continuing until November 30th. Persons should start being prepared for when a hurricane strikes in order to keep safe. An important measure to take is to reduce damage to the home by reinforcing the roof, shutters, doors, and garage doors in order to prevent wind and debris from tearing large openings within them – which may lead to flooding, broken property or injuries.
Every home should also have a Disaster Supply Kit which would include necessary items to get past the storms such as at least a gallon of water per person, non-perishable packaged or canned foods, snacks, paper plates, plastic utensils, blankets, pillows, clothing, First Aid Kit, medicines, prescription drugs, special items for babies and the elderly, toiletries, hygiene items, moisture wipes, flashlight and batteries, battery operated radio, fully charged cell phone with an extra battery, cash or credit cards, toys, books, games, important documents in waterproof containers, tools, pet care items (medication, ample supply of food and water, a carrier or cage, a muzzle, and leash) and vehicle fuel tanks that should be filled a few days before a hurricane strike.
In event of a hurricane strike, buildings have been identified to serve as a temporary shelter. Persons who may feel unsafe in their homes are advised to prepare to go to a friend or shelters which shall be opened prior the hurricane strike. However, shelters have rules. Remember to carry only your Disaster Supply Kit, do not carry alcohol, weapons, or pets. Pets should be left in a secure room or in an animal shelter where they can be safe.
