St. Maarten News – Six students of the St. Dominic High School International Baccalaureate diploma program class of 2017 will travel today to Dominica to assist with the rebuilding of the Charlotte Nursery school that was damaged by Tropical Storm Erika last year.
The students, Siddharth Jethwani, Vishal Mahtani, Deep Gianchandani, Barkha Bharwani, Khushbu Mirchandani and Kanishka Ramchandani will be accompanied by their Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) coordinator Saakshi Daryani.
The scope of voluntary work the students are going to be engaging in at Charlotte Nursery School includes: painting, installing new doors, sanding and varnishing desks, and replacing chalkboards. The students will also be donating school supplies and have the opportunity to meet with the Rotary, Rotaract and Interact members of Dominica and visit the St. Martin Secondary School. At the end of each day, the students must write a reflection on their activities which will be posted on the school’s Facebook page www.facebook.com/SDHSIBDP/
This initiative is financed from the proceeds from the following fundraising activities organized by the IB diploma students: Domino’s coupon booklet sales, 24-hour Lesson-thon, “Straight out of St. Maarten” tee-shirt sales, and food sales. Through their ten month fundraising efforts, the students have made this project a reality with the assistance of the Rotary Club of Dominica, Domino’s St. Maarten, Office World, Jade Dollar Store, Big Sale, the Manek Family, St. Maarten Mid-Isle Rotary Club and guidance from the school’s management.
