St. Maarten – Minister Silveria Jacobs (Education) said on Wednesday that she is unaware that many children taking part in after-school activities are uninsured.

Routinely, school children are insured during school hours and up to one hour after their school activities end. However, the after-school activities do not fall under any insurance.

“This is something I will have to look at,” the minister said in answer to questions from this newspaper. “We always want more after-school programs and there is always a budget attached to it. That is why this is going slowly.”

Asked whether it is possible to extend the school-insurance to include after-school activities, the minister said: “If there is a serious financial line attached to it I cannot commit to that at this point. I will have to do some research on this.”
