PHILIPSBURG–A total of 1,135 civil servants are expected to reach pension age in ten years, by 2028. Prime Minister Leona Romeo-Marlin provided the figures to Members of Parliament (MPs) during the continuation of a meeting of the Central Committee of Parliament on the draft National Ordinance for the Revision of the Pension of Civil Servants on Thursday. She was responding to a question on how many civil servants will reach pension age in the coming two, five and ten years.

According to the figures provided to MPs, 83 civil servants will reach the age of 62 and none age 65 by 2020; 285 civil servants will reach age 62 and 83 will reach age 65 by 2023; and 679 will reach age 62 and 456 will reach age 65 by 2028.

If passed by parliament, the pension age for civil servants will move from 62 to 65 as of January 1, 2019. Built into the draft ordinance is the possibility for workers to retire at the age of 62 if they want to. However, they will receive a somewhat reduced pension.
