MARIGOT--Daniella Jeffry High School in Concordia was in the news again on Monday regarding twelve Nautical Maintenance Section students having been selected to attend the Martinique Boat Show taking place May 19-22.
The students were presented at a press conference with the various partners supporting the initiative that was driven by Club Nautique de Saint-Martin (CNSM).
The partners present included Lycée Principal Janine Hamlet, President of CNSM Bülent Gülay and representatives of the Chamber of Commerce CCISM, Centre Symphorien d’Insertion (CSI), Lions Club Oualichi which recently made a donation to Club Nautique, and Délégation Régionale Académique à la Jeunesse, à l’Engagement et aux Sports (DRAJES).
Eight of the students are pursuing a professional nautical baccalaureate while four others were selected by Marie-Paule Rousseau-Cornette, President of the CSI association in French Quarter, in keeping with the wish for such opportunities to be available to all districts. The students are all very interested and motivated.
The trip to the boat show is an opportunity for the students to discover the different nautical professions that will help shape and determine their future careers in the industry. At the show, they will meet exhibitors from all over the Caribbean, learn about training and employment opportunities, meet with business leaders and participate in workshops offered on site.
“It’s a great opportunity for them and I hope that they will come back to us with professional projects that we will help them to realise,” said Chamber of Commerce President Angèle Dormoy.
The students will fly to Fort-de-France, Martinique, on Wednesday, May 18. They will be accompanied by their teacher William Raux, Marie-Paule Rousseau-Cornette, Isabelle Gore and Nika Shillingford of CNSM.
The 12 students are Derwin Hunt, Christopher Bredy, Nelantonio Guzman, Kerby Jean-Baptiste, Ajani Tearr, Ronaldo Benjamin, Raylin Gomez, Julio Ramirez and, from French Quarter, Adrian Garcia, Roberto Warner, Raquel Eloy Polo and Merlando Beausol-Norville.
Also on the agenda for the students are three activities: discovering mangroves by kayak on a guided tour in Baie du Robert, discovering rowing, and a visit to Habitation Clément. Aside from the boat show they will also be visiting the marina and boatyards in Marin.
The budget for the trip to Martinique is around 15,000 euros.
Marine Trades Association Métimer will also be present at the boat show to promote St. Martin.
