PHILIPSBURG--Some 124 traffic accidents on St. Maarten roads were recorded between February 1 and February 28, according to figures released by the St. Maarten Police Force KPSM on Monday.

This amounts to more than four accidents per day on average. The 124 accidents recorded in February are only six fewer than the 130 recorded January 1-28.

In February, most accidents occurred between 12:00 and 1:00pm. This was similar to January, when the most accidents took place between 10:00am and 4:00pm, according to KPSM figures.

Traffic accidents involving scooters were a common theme in February, said police, adding that they were usually caused by riders’ risky driving habits.

“Riders have become more brazen and callous with their behaviour on the public road. Some individuals seem to be getting a kick out of driving recklessly between other vehicles, videotaping [themselves – Ed.] and posting it on their social media pages,” said police. “[We] are not going to tolerate this level of behaviour on the road. If the scooter riders intend to run the gauntlet, then they will suffer the consequences when caught.”

Human error – such as reckless driving and violating traffic laws – was a significant contributing factor in February’s road accidents, said police.
