PHILIPSBURG–Given the aftermath and devastation of the passing of Hurricane Irma in September, the Soca Rumble organisers were left perplexed as to how to pick up the pieces and launch Soca Rumble 2018.

According to a press release on Tuesday, the show is on and will take place during the Carnival festivities next year. E-mails have already been sent to interested persons and organisers are reaching out to see how many will register by December 31. Interested persons can send their inquiries via e-mail to

“This hurricane left no stone unturned, as it is evident that both businesses and residents have been affected alike, consequently resulting in sponsors not being able to contribute towards this great effort next year. However, thanks to a recent development, the team was able to secure a limited budget to cover a little under 1/3 of the projected cost.

“Some adjustments were deemed necessary to ensure continuity. The platform will remain the same: Groovy and Power Soca, winner and second runner-up. Performance fees will also be allotted to all contestants, but the amounts will be adjusted,” according to organisers on Tuesday.

The winners in both categories will receive US $7,500; second runners-up $2,000 and performing two songs fee will be $500, while performing one song can get a performer $275. All songs must be submitted no later than January 22, 2018.

As customary, the songs will be evaluated internally and the announcement of finalists will be made on February 12. Chosen songs must be mastered by February 26. Non-compliance will mean immediate disqualification.

The public is encouraged to monitor Soca Rumble’s Facebook page for updates about the upcoming show.
