33,960 consults, 423 babies born at SMMC in 2017   | THE DAILY HERALD

 CAY HILL–Fewer babies were delivered at St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) last year compared to the two prior years.

Statistics provided by SMMC to this newspaper showed that a total of 423 bouncing bundles of joy were delivered at SMMC last year compared to 435 in 2016 and 482 in 2015. A total of 201 babies have been delivered at SMMC for the first half of this year.

There were 33,960 consultations at SMMC in 2017 compared to 31,218 in 2016 and 22,148 in 2015. From January to June of this year, there were 20,394 consultations.

There were 3,410 admissions in 2017, 3,800 in 2016 and 3,706 in 2015. From January to June of this year there were 2,056 admissions.

There were fewer Emergency Room (ER) visits last year, when there were 14,152 ER visits, compared to 14,607 in 2016 and 13,505 in 2015. From January to June of this year, there were 6,426 ER visits.

The number of Operating Room (OR) procedures increased last year when 2,903 procedures were done, compared to 2,037 in 2016 and 1,872 in 2015. From January to June of this year there were 2,659 OR procedures.

There were 34,027 diagnostic procedures, including X-rays, performed at SMMC in 2017, compared to 36,247 in 2016 and 33,157 in 2015. A total of 18,780 have been performed so far for this year.

As for chemotherapy treatments, 530 were performed in 2017 compared to 533 in 2016 and 604 in 2015. A total of 532 have been performed thus far this year.

SMMC had a total of 308 full-time employees in its service in 2017, compared to 305 in 2016 and 288 in 2015. From January to June this year, SMMC had 318 full-time employees.
