50 from St. Eustatius travel to St. Kitts Agriculture Fair

Agriculture Fair goers await their boats at Charles A. Woodley Pier in St. Eustatius.

ST. EUSTATIUS–A group of fifty people, including farmers, made their way from St. Eustatius to St. Kitts in two boats on Thursday, to attend the annual agricultural fair. The Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries LVV organized the St. Kitts trip.

Statia farmers have for many years travelled to the agricultural fair on Nevis. Several people in the group had planned to attend a similar fair earlier in Nevis, but this did not become a reality; efforts were then focused on the one in St. Kitts.

The trips were originally organized especially for farmers and were later extended to include interested public. Attendees purchase livestock, vegetables, fruits, and plants at the fair.

LVV representative said provisions and the plants brought back to Statia help to stimulate many kitchen gardens and agriculture in general.

St. Eustatius has been known for its plantations and the export of provisions to the neighbouring islands. Yams and sweet potatoes were the main export produce to St. Maarten, Curaçao, Aruba, Saba and St. Kitts.

The Mekman/Progressive Labour Party (PLP) government recently put the onus on Statians to grow their own food under the “Made in Statia” banner. This has led to tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplants, peppers and others being added to the exports.

The “Made in Statia” plantation is near Concordia Well.
