92 persons held for offences, looting, since Hurricane Irma

MARIGOT–The Gendarmerie in cooperation with Prosecutor Yves Paillard disclosed Thursday, since the passage of Hurricane Irma some 100 search warrants have been issued enabling 150m3 of merchandise to be seized and stored for safekeeping.

To date 92 individuals have been arrested for various offences and many court summonses issued. From the 92, some 55 individuals were arrested for looting. Another 30 were held for drug offences or violence with weapons. Eight vehicles were also seized and a number of weapons and ammunition. Six persons have been transferred to Guadeloupe and seven have been imprisoned.
The Gendarmerie is attempting to return the stolen goods to businesses or individuals. Matching the stolen goods to the businesses has been difficult; therefore the Gendarmerie is asking businesses to come forward to identify their items. The Collectivité has indicated unclaimed items will be donated to the Red Cross.
